James & Lynn McClure
James McClure, AB’42, JD’49, is uninhibited in expressing his affection for the University of Chicago. “I’m in love with it,” says McClure. “From the moment I went to orientation as a first-year living in Burton-Judson, I knew it was the greatest intellectual place in the world. It’s been a major influence on my life.”
Life-long volunteers at the University in multiple capacities, Jim and his wife, Lynn McClure, funded the Carolyn P. McClure Charitable Remainder Unitrust in 2002. The McClures, who were entitled to a charitable income tax deduction in the year they established the trust, used appreciated securities to fund the trust.
An estate-planning attorney and partner at a major Chicago law firm, Jim McClure carefully weighed the pros and cons of setting up a charitable remainder unitrust. “As you get older, you worry about how you can invest your money so that it will protect you,” says McClure. “The unitrust provides a relatively guaranteed income at a rate that can still benefit from some growth. I can also add to the trust throughout my life. It increases my annual income and I get a new tax deduction for each additional contribution.”
